I recently received an alert from Google Search Console about a “page indexing issue”.
It was warning me that a ” Submitted URL seems to be a Soft 404.” After following the link to check out the problem, it turned out the page it was talking about was /your-cart
This is the default URL for the shopping cart page in WooCommerce. The empty cart page just contained a few lines of text, and although it isn’t a 404 page Google were making some pretty strong and assumptions and deciding it was.
The fix?
The was to fix it is pretty straight forward.
In your robots.txt file add this line:
Disallow: /your-cart/
This will stop Google from following links to your empty cart page. Give Google a few days to re-crawl the website, and the soft 404 error will be gone.
